Kinesiology

General Information

Kinesiology is a toolset based around muscle response tests. The results of these tests are often used to assist therapists with making diagnoses of a client's health. This information may then be used to guide the therapist as to what forms of treatment will be suitable for the client.

It is important to note that there are a number of meanings associated with this term. There are also a number of streams that incorporate muscle testing and as such are labelled with the term 'Kinesiology'. As practiced today, however, Kinesiology is typically applied as a combination of the muscle testing techniques referred to above with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles.

How does Kinesiology work?

As with other Eastern influenced therapies, Kinesiology explores the flow and balance of the body's energies (Qi) and attempts to stimulate the body's natural ability to heal itself. Where the Qi is blocked or unbalanced, an over-supply or an under-supply of energy may eventuate. A Kinesiologist may consequently detect this by evaluating a muscle's ability to respond and function as compared bilaterally.

What treatments are applied as a result?

This varies from session to session depending on the client's needs and the specialties of the therapist. Typically however, weak or inhibited muscles will be stimulated whilst over-active muscles will be relaxed. Conditions that have been associated with broader health problems may be approached via clinical nutrition, or other TCM techniques.
