Ear Candling (also known as 'Ear Coning') is the process of lighting a specially made, hollow candle and gently fitting this device into the entrance of the ear passage. The flame at the top end of the candle is believed to create a heated vacuum which slowly draws congestion from the ear canal. In therapeutic applications gentle massage, acupressure or lymphatic drainage techniques may be applied to enhance the response.
Candling is typically described as an 'ancient' practice and is often associated with Egyptian, Siberian, Native American and other cultures. These cultures are said to have used hollow reeds, twigs and other devices to achieve similar results to the current retail products.
Most clients who request ear candling do so to relieve the sensation of 'blocked ears'. Whilst candling is not an alternative to medical practices such as 'syringing', it is commonly held to provide such relief, and is typically a very relaxing and gentle treatment. Where massage, acupressure or lymphatic drainage techniques are also applied by a qualified therapist there may also be relief from the effects of sinus congestion and headaches.
There are no official requirements for a therapist to carry out ear candling. They should, however, be well versed in the instructions and contra-indications for ear candling, whilst being capable and gentle in its application.
Clients should not book in for an ear candling appointment if the following circumstances are present:
