Cupping is a therapy that involves creating a vacuum in a glass cup (or similar device) and applying that cup to the skin. Many cups may be added in any one treatment, and these cups may be left in one position for an appropriate duration or they may be 'slid' along the skin, applying the suction to a broader area. The vacuum may be created either by inserting and withdrawing a flame from the cup, or by using a 'pumping' device. The technique is an ancient one in both Eastern and Western civilizations - in fact, there is evidence to suggest that animal horns were used in the earlier civilizations for similar purposes.
Whilst cupping is a technique passed down by families and cultures for generations, it does require considerable skill and knowledge to apply this treatment effectively and safely. For these reasons, therapists should have completed a recognized workshop or course unit in cupping or received expert tuition from a capable therapist.
