Bowen Therapy

General Information

Bowen Therapy (or Bowen Technique) is an approach to muscle release as devised by Mr Tom Bowen (1916-1982) in Australia. It is based around a series of cross-fiber frictions that seek to balance the body and trigger its own natural healing processes. The technique is quite gentle and may be applied either through clothing or directly to the skin. Mr Bowen was quite renowned amongst the local massage and sporting communities at the time and his services were in high demand for their lasting benefits. Having initially taught his technique to a small number of therapists, the technique has now spread to be taught worldwide.

What are the Benefits of Bowen Therapy?

As Bowen Therapy acts not only on the muskulo-skeletal system, but also on the circulatory and nervous systems, a wide range of benefits may be obtained. The following conditions may respond well to this therapy:

  • Back, neck and shoulder pain
  • Sciatica, knee and leg pain
  • Migraines and ear-ache
  • Digestive issues
  • Hormonal irregularity
  • Fatigue and Fibromyalgia (muscle pain)
  • Repetitive strain injury and tennis elbow

What are the qualifications of a Bowen Therapist?

Whilst it is possible to be trained to Certificate IV or Diploma level in the Bowen Technique, many Bowen Therapists have been taught the techniques privately or in independent seminars. When seeking a professional therapist, it is best to ensure that they have at least a Certificate IV in Bowen or Massage Therapy and are members of a professional association.
